Role Title:  Data Support Engineer

The Role

Data Support Engineers work closely with change delivery colleagues to develop strategic data platforms and to support those platforms once operational. A balanced mix of development and support skills are used to assist us towards our strategic goals. This role is responsible for organisation of data assets, manipulation and linking of. Additional responsibilities are amongst MI systems, MuleSoft, Power Apps etc. to create business benefit.

 

Outcomes of the Role

  • Collaborate with colleagues in the Group Data Office to support the organisation’s data strategy and enable business change through reliable data operations.
  • Provide operational support for data platforms, with a focus on database management, SQL performance, and Snowflake administration.
  • Contribute to project delivery including data pipeline deployments, platform upgrades, and service improvements.
  • Support BAU activity through established ITIL processes, ensuring data platform stability and availability.
  • Identify and implement opportunities for automation and continuous service improvement across data operations.
  • Help define and maintain data operations standards and best practices for use across the wider business.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Experience

  • Proven experience working with relational databases, ideally SQL Server and/or Snowflake.
  • Strong SQL skills, including writing, optimizing, and troubleshooting queries and stored procedures.
  • Familiarity with database concepts such as schemas, tables, views, indexes, and keys.
  • Experience with Snowflake administration, including user roles, warehouse management, and data sharing.
  • Ability to work autonomously and collaboratively within cross-functional teams.
  • Skilled at balancing delivery with support needs, and comfortable working under pressure in a complex, regulated environment.
  • Experience working within the ITIL framework (incident, request, change and problem management).
  • Experience with SFTP and REST APIs for data integration and exchange.
  • Exposure to cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure, particularly in relation to data services.
  • Experience with shell scripting (e.g., PowerShell, Bash) for automation and operational tasks.
  • Familiarity with business intelligence tools such as Power BI or Business Objects is a plus.
  • Comfortable using the Office365 productivity stack in a modern workplace environment.
