About the Role
The Application Engineer is responsible for the effective day-to-day operation, support, maintenance and continuous improvement of business-critical applications. The role ensures services remain secure, resilient and available, whilst delivering excellent support to business users and contributing to the successful delivery of change into production.
The Application Engineer acts as the technical owner and subject matter expert for a portfolio of applications, ensuring incidents are resolved efficiently, problems are proactively addressed, and operational risks are reduced through automation, monitoring and continuous improvement.
What you’ll be responsible for
- Service & Operational Support
- Support business-critical applications within agreed service levels and operational standards.
- Perform daily operational checks and monitoring activities.
- Investigate, diagnose and resolve incidents and service requests.
- Take ownership of incidents through to resolution, ensuring stakeholders are kept informed.
- Participate in on-call and out-of-hours support where required.
- Maintain application availability, performance and stability.
- Incident & Problem Management
- Manage incidents in accordance with ITIL processes.
- Perform root cause analysis for recurring or major incidents.
- Identify trends and proactively raise Problem records.
- Drive actions that reduce incident volumes and improve service reliability.
- Contribute to post-incident reviews and operational resilience activities.
- Change & Release Support
- Review, implement and validate application changes.
- Provide SME input into projects and change initiatives.
- Ensure new services and enhancements are transitioned effectively into support.
- Participate in CAB, release activities and deployment validation.
- Support product teams with operational and technical expertise.
- Monitoring, Automation & Improvement
- Proactively monitor application health and performance.
- Identify opportunities to automate manual operational tasks.
- Improve observability, alerting and operational tooling.
- Deliver Continuous Service Improvements (CSIs) that enhance reliability, efficiency and customer experience.
- Reduce operational effort while maintaining appropriate controls and governance.
- Documentation & Knowledge Management
- Create and maintain runbooks, support procedures and technical documentation.
- Ensure support knowledge is accurate, current and accessible.
- Contribute to disaster recovery and operational resilience documentation.
- Support training and knowledge sharing across the team.
- Supplier & Stakeholder Management
- Work closely with business stakeholders, project teams and third-party vendors.
- Escalate issues where appropriate and track supplier performance.
- Communicate clearly with technical and non-technical audiences.
- Build strong relationships across Technology and the wider business.
About you

- Strong incident, problem and change management experience.
- Understanding of ITIL processes and service management principles.
- Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills.
- Experience working with monitoring and alerting tools.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.

- Experience of financial services applications.
- Experience with ServiceNow, SQL, scripting or automation platforms.
- Understanding of operational resilience, disaster recovery and security controls.
- Experience working with vendors and managed service providers.
