CAMERON PATERSON Client Service Administrator Apprentice, Glasgow

I joined Rathbones November 2023, as an apprentice in the
Glasgow office, having graduated from Abertay University
with a degree in Physical Activity and Health.
Throughout my time at University, I worked in many client
facing positions and always enjoyed talking with clients
and problem-solving to find a way to achieve their goals.
Therefore, finding a role within the financial services
seemed like something I would be good at but also enjoy.

What attracted you to Rathbones/Wealth
Management?

Rathbones has a longstanding reputation for delivering
excellent client service. The firm’s values, which centre
around personalised approaches and building long-term
relationships drew my attention, as this is something I value
in my own life, professionally and recreationally. Rathbones
also invest in their employees, offering the opportunity
to develop their skills and knowledge either in-house or
via professional exams, which I have now benefited from
greatly.

Did you always know you were interested in financial
services/investment management?

Although I didn’t pursue a degree relating to finance, I have
always been interested in the financial services and stock
market. Members of my family have also worked within
the financial services for many years, so it has always been
something I have been aware of, and I suppose ‘The Wolf of
Wall Street’ also helped!

Why did you choose to follow the apprenticeship
route?

In my last year at school, I did favour going down the
apprenticeship route but unfortunately COVID 19 put a stop
to that as most positions closed. This position was posted
a few months after I graduated and as soon as I saw it, I
knew it was a perfect opportunity for me to get my foot
in the door to the financial services and start on a fresh
slate. It has been the best decision I have made in last few
years. While completing my day-to-day role I have had the
opportunity to complete professional exams as soon as I
started. It has given me not only a job but the opportunity
to expand and develop my knowledge.

What is the most enjoyable part of your job?
The team I work with in Glasgow are fantastic. Everyone
was very welcoming and happy to answer questions I had
when I started. My role is more administrative based, but
since the start I have had an interest to learn more about
the investment management side. I now attend weekly
investment meetings and have catch-ups and 1-1 time with
the investment managers to expand my learning. I enjoy
building relationships with the clients and learning about
their life and who they are.
